Frequently Asked Questions

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

What type of insulation is best for a house in Florida?

It depends on the space. Under a roof deck, open-cell spray foam is common because it seals and insulates at lower cost. On a vented attic floor, blown-in fiberglass over a sealed ceiling is often the best value. In walls that may see water, closed-cell foam resists moisture better than batts.

How much does spray foam insulation cost in Fort Myers?

We use national figures: HomeGuide lists $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot installed, roof deck foam at $1,500 to $9,000 and an attic at $3,000 to $8,000. The written estimate after our visit is your price.

Who manufactures spray foam insulation?

Spray foam is made by several chemical companies and sold as two-part systems that installers mix on site. What matters for you is that the product suits the space, meets code for its location (including any required ignition or thermal barrier), and is applied at the right thickness. We name the product type and thickness on the quote.

What R-value does a Fort Myers attic need?

The Insulation Institute's summary of Florida's 2023 code lists R-38 for ceilings in Climate Zone 2. ENERGY STAR suggests R-49 for an uninsulated Zone 2 attic.

Should I replace insulation that got wet during Ian?

If it was soaked and is now matted, stained or musty, yes. Wet wall insulation usually came out with the drywall during repairs; attic insulation that got wet from roof leaks often needs to come out too.

Is there a downside to spray foam?

It costs more than loose fill, is hard to remove, and needs the house empty for about a day while it cures. A sealed attic also changes how the AC handles humidity. Where those trade-offs do not pay off, we recommend something else.

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

Is spray foam good in flood-prone homes?

Closed-cell foam resists water better than batts, so it is a common choice for lower walls in homes that have flooded. It does not stop flooding; it holds up better afterward.

Does spray foam help with hurricanes?

Closed-cell adds some stiffness, but it is not a substitute for code-required roof attachment or storm protection, and we do not sell it as such.

How long do we need to be out?

HomeGuide advises at least 24 hours while foam cures.

Will a sealed attic change my AC?

It can. Have an HVAC contractor check the system when the attic becomes part of the conditioned space.

Attic Air Sealing & Insulation Questions

Is it better to add insulation or replace it?

If what is there is dry and clean, adding on top works. If it is wet, soiled or blocking sealing work, remove it first.

How long does an attic job take?

Most sealing and blown-in jobs take a day.

Will this lower my FPL bill?

In under-insulated, leaky attics, sealing and insulating usually reduce the cooling load. How much depends on the starting point and the system.

Can you work in a condo attic?

With association approval for shared spaces. We can look and explain options.

Insulation Removal & Replacement Questions

Can wet insulation dry out and be reused?

Lightly damp attic insulation from a small, quickly fixed leak sometimes can. Flood-soaked insulation should be replaced.

Will my insurance pay?

It depends on your policy and the cause. We provide photos and a written scope.

Do I need a permit?

Repairs in Lee County's Special Flood Hazard Area require permits. Check with the county or your city.

How messy is attic removal?

The vacuum runs material straight into bags outside. We protect the path through the house.

Blown-In Insulation Questions

Is blown-in fiberglass good in a Florida attic?

Yes. It does not absorb water and settles little, which suits attics where leaks are a concern.

How long does it take?

Most attics take a day or less including sealing.

Can blown-in go into block walls?

No. Block homes are insulated on the inside face, behind the drywall.

What does it cost?

HomeGuide lists blown-in attics at $900 to $3,600 nationally. Your written estimate is the price.

Wall Insulation Questions

What insulation should go back in my flooded walls?

Closed-cell foam is a common choice because it resists water. The wall must be fully dry first.

Can you insulate block walls without removing drywall?

Not practically. Block homes are insulated behind the drywall, so it is best done when walls are open.

Is open-cell good for soundproofing?

It dampens sound between rooms well, though it is not full soundproofing.

Do I need a permit?

Most remodel, addition and flood repair work does. Check with your building department.

Metal Building & Warehouse Insulation Questions

How thick should foam be on a warehouse roof?

Enough closed-cell to stop condensation is the minimum. A cooled building needs more. We write thickness and R-value on the quote.

Can you spray with inventory inside?

Yes, with contents moved or covered. Overspray travels, so we plan the layout with you.

Will foam stop my metal roof from sweating?

Closed-cell bonded to the underside of the steel keeps humid air off the metal, which is what causes the sweating.

Do I need a permit?

It depends on the building and use. Check with your building department.
