Getting the Most From Loose Fill
Blown-in insulation in Fort Myers is often the best value in a vented attic. Loose fiberglass or cellulose is blown through a hose onto the attic floor, where it forms an even blanket around trusses, wiring and the tight corners near the eaves that batts never fill well. Over a sealed ceiling it reaches R-38 or R-49 at a fraction of the cost of roof deck foam.
Fiberglass or cellulose
Blown fiberglass is light, does not absorb water and settles little; Fixr lists it at $1.65 to $2.60 per square foot. Cellulose is denser recycled paper treated for fire and pests, and slows air movement somewhat better; Fixr lists it at $1.75 to $3.80. In Lee County attics where roof leaks are a concern, fiberglass is common, but both work.
Depth targets
The Insulation Institute's summary of Florida's 2023 energy code lists R-38 for ceilings in Climate Zone 2, and ENERGY STAR recommends R-49 for an uninsulated Zone 2 attic. We place depth markers across the attic before blowing so you can see the target was met.
Seal first
Blown-in slows heat but lets air pass. Before any goes in, we seal the hatch, fixtures, fans, plumbing and wiring holes, interior wall tops, soffits and the air handler area. That step is where much of the comfort improvement comes from.
Dense-pack walls
In wood-frame walls that are closed and under-insulated, such as some additions, second floors and older frame homes, dense-packed cellulose or fiberglass can be blown into each stud bay through small holes, then patched. HomeGuide lists dense-pack cellulose at $1.60 to $4.20 per square foot. Concrete block walls are not filled this way.
Ventilation and clearance
Baffles go at the eaves to keep soffit vents open. Insulation stays clear of flues and fixtures that need clearance. Bath fans that vent into the attic should be redirected outside.
Over old insulation
Dry, clean insulation can stay, with new fill on top. Insulation that is wet, matted, soiled or covering leaks to be sealed comes out first. HomeGuide lists removal at $1 to $2 per square foot.
Fort Myers attic quirks
Many Lee County attics are low at the eaves and crowded with trusses, ducts and the air handler platform. Loose fill reaches those tight spots far better than batts. Where an attic is too low to walk, we blow from the center and work outward so the depth is even all the way to the edges.
